DIET OR EXERCISE

WHAT'S BEST FOR WEIGHT LOSS?

DIET OR EXERCISE?

I love working out. I love playing physical activities. I don't do them to lose weight, I just enjoy them.

I eat pizza, burgers, chips, chocolate and enjoy a drink or 2 and still stay trim.

I've noticed that at my gym, many people will exercise really hard and regular.

They may even have personal trainers who push them to their limits and beyond.

The common factor with the majority of these people is that they don't seem to be losing weight.

Quite a few are obese but they are very fit.

So obviously the exercise isn't working. Or is it?

It doesn't matter how much you exercise, if you take in more calories than you burn then you WILL put on weight.

You would have to walk for almost 2 hours to burn off a Mars bar. So you may be at the gym for an hour but it's not going to make a dent on those busicuits you ate earlier.

On the other hand, if you need 2000 calories a day to keep at your normal weight and you reduce this by 100 calories a day, then you WILL lose weight.

So

DIET IS MORE VALUABLE THAN EXERCISE WHEN LOSING WEIGHT

The shape you become though, is another matter.

Here is what happens to your body when you lose weight by diet alone.

When you lose weight by diet alone, you will get smaller but your shape will probably stay the same.

If you are a pear shape, then you will just become a smaller pear.

You wont add any muscle, in fact, if you eat the wrong foods, you may even lose the little muscle you have.

Being overweight results in more life threatening illness's than anything else.

For this reason alone, if you lose weight by diet alone then you are doing well.

If you want to be more healthier, have stronger bones, firmer skin and more muscle tone then you have to add exercise.

Your body composition can be controlled by diet AND exercise.

If you want to make your arms bigger, then you do more bicep curls. If your legs are skinny and unshapely then you do the relevant exercises to change their shape. As you lose body fat through the right diet, your muscles will make an appearance.

The importance of adding muscle is very high, especially as you get older.

Cardio alone will not change your body shape.

In fact, over the years I have seen so many, mainly women, do just cardio.

They definitely look slimmer but they lose so much muscle definition, that their necks and faces look older and haggard. They have almost no body curves.

You still need to do cardio, but it has to be correct type and not a big part of your exercise regime.

The following image is a little extreme but highlights the difference.

Too much cardio will result in a saggy shape.

So ultimately, it's what you really want. Losing weight is simple, just watch what you eat and eat a little less than yoiur body needs.

Eat too little and then your metabolism will slow down and you will create a "gain weight easily" body. That's the worst.

Eat a little less than you need and you will lose weight but not change your body shape.

Exercise correctly and keep a check on your diet and you will be slimmer, fitter, curvier and much healthier.

Here's a summary
